The Maybourne Riviera
Maybourne's first house outside London, on a ridge above Roquebrune with Monaco below it.
The Maybourne Riviera stands on the ridge above Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, high enough that the building reads as a glass bar from the coast road and from Monaco below it. Accommodation is around sixty-five rooms and suites. Jean-Michel Wilmotte drew the architecture; the interiors were split between André Fu and Bryan O'Sullivan Studio, which is unusual and visible — the house does not read as one hand. Dining runs from Jean-Georges Vongerichten's kitchen on the top floor to a restaurant at the pool and a beach club down at the shore, which is a drive rather than a walk.
Maybourne's standing is Claridge's and the Connaught, and this is the first time the group has built rather than inherited. That matters to the class question: in London the group's houses are their addresses and cannot be moved, and here there was no address to inherit, because the ridge was empty. What the group put on it is priced and built above the Riviera norm rather than inside it, which is the test this collection applies, and it is the reason this record stands here while the London houses of the same group were withdrawn to the hotel layer in September.
Built, not inherited. The London houses cannot be moved and are recorded in the hotel layer for that reason. This one was drawn from nothing on a ridge, and the authorship travelled with the group.
The section is the building. Fourteen floors cut into a cliff, with the entrance at the top and the sea a long way below, is a structural decision before it is a design one.
Who it is not for
Wrong for anyone who wants to walk to the water: the shore is a drive down the hill, and the beach club is a separate place. Wrong for travellers who want a house with one designer's temperament, since three studios worked here and it shows. And wrong for guests who came for old Riviera, because this building is new and makes no attempt to look otherwise.
