Airelles Château de la Messardière

A nineteenth-century château in a park above Saint-Tropez, reopened by Airelles in July 2021.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

Château de la Messardière sits above Saint-Tropez in a park of about ten hectares — twenty-five acres — on the hill between the town and the Salins beaches, with the bay on one side and Provençal country on the other. The building is a nineteenth-century château that traded as a palace hotel for decades before Airelles took it on. The park is the point of difference: it is large enough to behave as an estate, which is why a sister collection records the same ground and why the address alone does not account for the house.

Airelles reopened it on 1 July 2021 after a renovation directed by Christopher Tollemer. The group's standing in this register is a house ruling rather than a property one: Airelles is held a class above wherever it operates, in Courchevel, Val d'Isère, Versailles and here, so this record does not have to argue the point from the château. Dining includes a seasonal Matsuhisa and the Provençal Auberge des Maures, brought up the hill from the town. The season follows Saint-Tropez rather than the calendar, and the house is shut for the months when the coast is empty.

A house ruling, applied here. Airelles is recorded as a class above as a house, so this record does not argue the point from the château. What the château adds is territory, and that belongs to the sister that sees it.

The park is what the rate buys. Ten hectares above Saint-Tropez in August is the scarce thing, and it is the reason the house can be quiet in the loudest month on the coast.

Who it is not for

Wrong for anyone who wants the port at the door: the château is up the hill, and every evening in town is a drive or a shuttle. Wrong for travellers who want a beach on the property, since the sea is below and the beaches are separate. And wrong for guests looking for a small authored house — this is a palace hotel in a park, with the scale that implies.
