Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve

Rockefeller's 1958 coast, rebuilt in 2012 as a Reserve priced and staffed above the brand on the sign.

Dorado Beach sits on Puerto Rico's north shore, about half an hour west of San Juan, on ground Laurance Rockefeller bought in the 1950s and opened in December 1958 as one of the first RockResorts. The hotel closed after a long decline; the Reserve was rebuilt on the same footprint and opened in December 2012, which is why every room faces the sea — the original setback would not be permitted for a new building today. The boulders Rockefeller set offshore still hold the cove, and Su Casa, the 1920s Livingston hacienda, is the one structure that survived.

Reserve is not a grade of Ritz-Carlton but a separate product: a handful of houses worldwide, run at a staffing density and a design specificity the parent brand does not attempt. At Dorado that shows in the Embajador service, in the compound's small share of the 1,400-acre coastal preserve around it, and in golf courses laid out by Robert Trent Jones and rebuilt by his son. The property reopened again in October 2018 after Hurricane Maria, and the restoration followed the original footprint rather than taking the chance to build closer to the water or higher than the palms.

Reserve is the argument and the parent is the control. A Ritz-Carlton is recorded in Luxury Resorts; this house is recorded here because it stands measurably above that line on the same island, under the same owner.

The preserve does the work. What cannot be rebuilt is land kept from development for seventy years — mature forest, palm groves, protected shoreline — and the resort occupies a fraction of it.

Who it is not for

Wrong for anyone looking for a small authored villa house: this is a sizeable resort with golf, several restaurants and a family trade, and it does not pretend otherwise. Wrong for travellers who want walkable town life outside the gate. And wrong for guests who read history as decoration — the Rockefeller story here is a constraint on the architecture, not a theme.
