Rosewood Little Dix Bay
Rockefeller's 1964 Virgin Gorda hotel, reopened in 2020 after four years and a hurricane.
Little Dix Bay occupies a crescent on the north shore of Virgin Gorda, in the British Virgin Islands, on a holding given as 500 acres running back from the beach. Laurance Rockefeller opened it in 1964, two beaches and six years after Dorado, and built it on the same rule he used in Puerto Rico: nothing taller than the palms, and the vegetation left where it stood. The resort closed in 2016 for a rebuild, was then hit by Hurricane Irma, and reopened on 7 January 2020 with the work finished — four years dark on an island where most of what closed in 2017 never came back.
Rosewood has operated the house since before the closure and rebuilt it with Meyer Davis, who kept the pavilion roofs and the open-sided dining room and changed almost everything beneath them. Accommodation after the reopening is around eighty rooms, suites and villas, which is fewer keys on more land than any other Rosewood in the Caribbean. The house is recorded here because it is held above the British Virgin Islands norm, and that norm is set by villa rental rather than by a luxury brand — which makes the comparison unusual and the recorded signal, when it comes, more important than the rate.
The second Rockefeller property in this register. Dorado Beach is the other, built six years earlier to the same instruction by the same man: nothing above the palms. One carries a Reserve flag now and one a Rosewood, and the instruction outlasted both.
Four dark years are the record. An island hotel that closes for a rebuild and is then hit by a hurricane usually reopens smaller or not at all. This one reopened finished, and that is what the rate pays for.
Who it is not for
Wrong for anyone who wants a short journey: Virgin Gorda is reached by ferry or small aircraft after an international flight, and the transfer is most of a day. Wrong for travellers who want nightlife, because Spanish Town is small and the evening ends early. And wrong for guests who read 1960s architecture as dated — the pavilions are low, open and deliberately plain, and the rebuild did not modernise them away.
