Rosewood São Paulo
A Jean Nouvel tower of planted trees over a maternity hospital where half a million Brazilians were born.
Rosewood São Paulo stands in Cidade Matarazzo, a block of early twentieth-century buildings off Avenida Paulista that had been derelict for decades. The hotel occupies the former Matarazzo maternity hospital, where the house says more than 500,000 people were born, together with a new tower beside it. Accommodation is 160 rooms and suites in the hotel, with a hundred further suites sold rather than let. It opened on 10 January 2022, after a restoration that took more than a decade and kept the hospital's chapel, its corridors and much of its fabric rather than clearing the site and starting again.
The tower is Jean Nouvel's, and it carries 250 trees up to fourteen metres tall planted on its faces, part of a programme restoring Mata Atlântica species on the site. Philippe Starck directed the interiors, and the house commissioned more than 450 works from fifty-seven Brazilian artists and artisans, made for the rooms and corridors they stand in. The authorship here is unusually literal: two named authors, a named programme and a commissioned collection, in a city whose luxury norm is set by international brands carrying none of these things.
Commissioned, not bought. Four hundred and fifty works made for the building by artists of the country it stands in is a different act from furnishing a hotel with art, and it is the clearest case of authorship in the register.
The hospital is kept, not themed. The chapel, the corridors and the name are the building's own, and the record rests on the restoration rather than on a reference to it.
Who it is not for
Wrong for anyone who wants a resort: this is a city house with no beach, no grounds and a garden that grows on a wall. Wrong for travellers who dislike a designed interior speaking loudly, because Starck's hand is everywhere and is meant to be seen. And wrong for guests who want quiet at the door — the block sits in central São Paulo, and the city is immediately outside it.
