Cheval Blanc Courchevel
An LVMH maison that opens for the winter and shuts for the summer, on the Jardin Alpin above Courchevel 1850.
Cheval Blanc Courchevel stands in the Jardin Alpin, the wooded shelf above Courchevel 1850, a few minutes from the lifts and reachable on skis from its own door. Its accommodation is counted in the mid-thirties across five floors, with a two-bedroom chalet and a larger residence beside the house. It is a seasonal house in the strict sense: it opens in December, closes in April, and for two-thirds of the year the building is shut rather than repurposed for a summer trade. The shelf itself is the quieter part of 1850, chosen for its trees and its distance from the main street.
The house is the first of the Cheval Blanc maisons, and LVMH built it rather than bought it — the group's hotel arm began here, before Randheli, St-Tropez, Paris and the Seychelles. Le 1947, the restaurant, carries Yannick Alléno's name and is the house's most public claim; a spa built around the group's own cosmetic houses is the other. What is on offer is the maison's standard applied to an alpine building, not an alpine hotel with a maison's name over the door, and the difference shows in the material and in how many people are employed to run thirty-odd keys.
The maison came before the hotel group. Cheval Blanc exists because a luxury house decided what a hotel should be, and this is the building where it decided it. The authorship is the record; the mountain is the address.
A closed house is part of the product. Four months of trading a year is not a limitation to explain away. It is what the rate and the staffing ratio are built on, and why the house never behaves like a year-round business.
Who it is not for
Wrong for anyone who wants a summer in the Alps: the house is shut, and the village with it. Wrong for travellers who came for the skiing rather than for the address, because most of what is charged for here happens indoors. And wrong for guests who want the run from the door to be the point — the Jardin Alpin is a quiet shelf above the resort, chosen for its trees and its distance from the main street.
