Bvlgari Resort Bali

A jeweller's second hotel, cut into a limestone cliff above the Indian Ocean off Bali's southern tip.

Editorial entry · sources recorded · property confirmation pending

Bvlgari Resort Bali stands on the Bukit Peninsula near Pecatu, at the southern tip of the island, on a plateau roughly 150 metres above the sea. The beach below belongs to the resort and is reached by its own inclined elevator through the cliff, with steps at the bottom and a last run in the early evening. Villas are terraced down the slope in lava stone, palimanan and bangkiray hardwood under alang-alang thatch, each with a plunge pool and a walled garden. The airport is about half an hour north; the Uluwatu temple is the neighbour, and the surf breaks below are the other one.

The house is the second hotel Bvlgari built, after Milan, and the architects are the same: Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel. Their work here is not a logo applied to a resort but the whole instrument — layout, stone, joinery, and the furniture, ceramics and woven fabrics made in Bali by local workshops to the studio's drawings, alongside a collection of Balinese antiques bought for the building. Marriott operates the property in joint venture with the maison, which is the commercial arrangement rather than the authorship, and the distinction matters here: the operator is interchangeable and the author is not.

The maison precedes the hotel. Bvlgari was a jeweller for a century before it was a hotelier, and it brings to Uluwatu a standard of finish it did not learn in hospitality. That is why this record sits here and not among the luxury brands.

The cliff is the plan. Almost everything else on the Bukit is a hotel with a view; here the section through the cliff — plateau, terraces, elevator, private beach — is the building. Take the view away and the architecture still stands up.

Who it is not for

This is wrong for anyone who wants to walk from the room to the sand: the beach is 150 metres below and reached by elevator and steps, with a last run in the early evening. It is wrong for travellers who want a large beach club scene, since the shore below is small and quiet by design. And it is wrong for guests who read Italian restraint as coldness — the house is dark wood and stone, not colour and spectacle.
