Rosewood Phuket
Six hundred metres of Emerald Bay, and a Rosewood built low enough to leave the forest standing.
Rosewood Phuket lies on Emerald Bay on the island's south-west coast, along 600 metres of beach that had not been built on before. The site runs to roughly 43 acres of hillside forest, and the pavilions and villas are set into it rather than across it: roofs are planted, walkways meander between banyans kept from the original stand, and the density is low for Phuket. Patong is close enough to reach and far enough to forget; the Old Town is a drive inland. The ground is a hillside, so most of the moving around the property is done by buggy.
The resort opened in November 2017 as the first Rosewood in South-East Asia and the first house to carry Asaya, the group's wellness idea. Interiors are credited to BAR Studio and the landscape to the Bangkok practice P Landscape, and the two were worked together rather than in sequence, which is why the building reads as terrain rather than as an object placed on it. A coral restoration project runs in the bay off the beach, paid for by the resort. The beach itself had not been built on before, which is rare on this coast and is the reason the site was worth the restraint.
Rosewood is recorded here as a house, not as a hotel brand. The group's sense-of-place method is authorship with a method behind it, and in Phuket it produced a resort that refuses the scale the island rewards.
The restraint is the expensive part. Leaving a 150-year-old banyan standing, planting the roofs and holding the key count down all cost the site value it would otherwise have sold.
Who it is not for
Wrong for anyone who wants Phuket's nightlife on the doorstep: the bay is quiet and the evening ends early. Wrong for travellers who measure a resort by the length of its facilities list, since the programme here is deliberately short. And wrong for guests who want a flat beachfront walk — the site is a hillside, and buggies do much of the moving.
